Meaning: earth
One of the five cities of the vale of Siddim named in the genealogical list of Canaan (Gen 10:19), whose king was Shinab (Gen 14:2ff.
It was destroyed along with Sodom and Gomorrah. It is not mentioned in the narrative of the destruction of those two cities (Gen 19:24, but later accounts refer to it; (Deut 29:23, Hos 11:8).
It is supposed by some to be the same as the City of Adam of Josh 3:16, the name of which still lingers in Damieh, the ford of Jordan. (See also Zeboim.)
