Meaning: man
The son of Seth, and grandson of Adam (Gen 5:6ff; Lk 3:38). He lived nine hundred and five years. In his time "men began to call upon the name of the Lord" (Gen 4:26), meaning either
(1) then began men to call themselves by the name of the Lord (marg.) i.e., to distinguish themselves thereby from idolaters; or
(2) then men in some public and earnest way began to call upon the Lord, indicating a time of spiritual revival.
Enos is the father of Cainan and other sons and daughters.

Son of Seth, Adam's third son. In his time men began to call upon Yhwh (Gen 4:26). At the age of ninety he begat Cainan, and he died at the age of 900 years (Gen 5:9-11; 1Chr 1:1). The name doubtless means "man," as it is equivalent to the often recurring "nomen appellativum" (missing hebrew text) ("man," Deut 32:26) and the Aramaic (missing hebrew text) (Dan 2:10). Enos and the descendants of Seth in general (Gen 5:1ff) have been regarded by some modern scholars as simply arbitrary pendants to the Cainites (Gen 4:17ff); but the two series of names are very different.
