Exodus Chapter 5, Verse 5

5: And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many,
and ye make them rest from their burdens.
5: And Pharao said, Behold now, the people is very numerous; let us not then give them rest from their work.
He called the Israelites "the people of the land," not "as being his own property, because he was the lord of the land" (Baumgarten), but as the working class, "land-people," equivalent to "common people," in distinction from the ruling castes of the Egyptians (vid., Jer 52:25 : Ezek 7:27).
