Most Biblical scholarship joins together the first five books of the Hebrew Bible as the Pentateuch. However, some strands of criticism also include Joshua, forming a Hexateuch.

This link was put forward by Alexander Geddes (1792), was prominent in much of 19th Century criticism, and was proposed again more recently by Gerhard von Rad.

In this view, the same basic sources are found in Joshua as the Pentatuech, with J, E, and D prominent in Chapters 1-12, and P in Chapters 13-24.
