4: ην δε εγγυς το πασχα η εορτη των ιουδαιων
4: And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
4: Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.
The passover. See Mt 26:2, Matthew Chapter 17.
A feast of the Jews. This is one of the circumstances of explanation thrown in by John which show that he wrote for those who were unacquainted with Jewish customs.
