49: And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.— edit KJV text
49: And I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high.— edit Douay text

The promise of my Father. The promise which the Father had made to them through Jesus. See Mt 10:19 Jn 14:16, Jn 14:17,26.

The promise was, that they should be aided by the power of the Holy Ghost. He also doubtless referred to the promise of God, made in the days of Joel, respecting the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. See Joel 2:28, Joel 2:29, compared with Acts 2:16ff.

Endued with power from on high. The power which would be given them by the descent of the Holy Ghost -- the power of speaking with tongues, of working miracles, and of preaching the gospel with the attending blessing and aid of the Holy Ghost. This was accomplished in the gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. See Acts 2:1 and following.
