About this site...

This is a project to build a wiki of information around the Bible. The Bible Wiki does not expect contributors to adhere to a particular religious viewpoint, but is aimed at a more scholarly discussion of the text. Anyone (including you) can contribute to this wiki. (To learn more about the "wiki" concept, visit Wikipedia.)

The Bible Wiki is still in the early stages of its life:

  • Phase 1 - complete!
Seed this wiki with enough content to start things off. The following information has been added:
We may supplement these later with text from other Public Domain Bible Resources.
  • Phase 2 - ongoing
Ensure that all these existing pages are properly cross-referenced, with hyperlinked people, places, events, concepts, etc. This is an on-going task, which you can assist with even if you have little academic theological knowledge. Please help!
  • Phase 3 - in progress
Start bringing the articles up to date with modern biblical scholarship. A lot has been discovered in the last century, and the pages seeded from older texts need to be updated to reflect this. Please help!
  • Phase 4 - just starting
Add commentary to the Biblical text. As with other MediaWiki projects, it is important to maintain a Neutral Point of View. In particular, the commentary should be exegesis rather than exposition (and certainly not eisegesis). To facilitate this, the biblical text is divided into one verse per page. This page in turn pulls in one or more translations of the text, as well as commentary for that verse. This enables the text to be used elsewhere independently of the commentary (e.g. to make Chapter pages). We have now started seeding commentary from several sources, including Barnes and Keil & Delitzsch. As with the dictionary articles, much of the scholarship behind this is out of date (and doesn't always meet our standards of NPOV!), but it provides a starting point for discussion. Please help!

A Note on Viewing Hebrew Text

In order to best view Biblical Hebrew throughout the Bible Wiki, it is recommended that you install the free SBL Hebrew Font.
