4: John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.- edit KJV text
4: John was in the desert, baptizing and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins.— edit Douay text

And so John appeared, baptizing in the desert and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  • We will consider ἐγένετο to be a Hebraism representing the conjunction
  • βαπτίζων is difficult because of the presence of the variant reading ὁ; with it we have a substantival participle, but

without it we have an adverbial participle. In the light of the parallelism with κηρύσσων and the evidence from Alexandrianus and the f1 and f13 families of manuscripts, we take this to be an adverbial participle and translate accordingly.

  • "baptism of repentance" or, "unto repentance" * "remission of sins" Acts 22:16
