Talk:Hebrews Chapter 7
From BibleWiki
v1. Melchiisedec, priest of the most high [El Elyon] God. From Genesis 14:18. Notice, Melchisedec didn't refer to God as the LORD, which is his proper revealed name. Abraham, however, did name the LORD in Genesis 14:22. v.2. In context, Abraham gave a tenth part of all the spoils (Genesis 14:20). Not the "choicest" spoils, but just the spoils. v3. Without descent means, there is no record of any of his ancestors. Made like unto the Son of God means, Melchisedec is not the Son of God, but made a priest in ways similar to the Son of God (Jesus) becoming a priest. v5. Those who are of the sons of Levi who receive the office of the priesthood - are the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law. One or both of these two scripture references apply:
Numbers 18:26-29 Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, when you take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe, and this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor, and as the fullness of the winepress. Thus you shall offer a heave offering unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORD's heave offering to Aaron the priest. Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave offering of the LORD, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.
Nehemiah 10:38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.
v6. But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham. "He" is Melchisedec. v7. Without all contradiction = with no contradiction, without any contradiction. vv4,7. In what fashion was Melchisedec considered great? The Greek word is Pelikos (G4080). Pelikos recalls the Spanish word for "movie picture", pelicula. The other G4080 occurence is in Galatians' last chapter. The apostle says "Ye see how large a letter I have written to you with my own hand." It refers to the size of a graphic. Melchisedec is a large figure, a distinguished picture or figure of a man. He held king and priest offices. Abraham the less (G1640) is blessed of Melchisedec the better (G2909). (WORDS OF COMPARISON) v8. But there [in scripture] he [Melchisedec] receiveth them [tithes], of whom it is witnessed that he lives. v11. After the order of Melchisedec means, in the similitude of. Compare verse 15. v12. For the priesthood being "changed (G3346) (meta ti-thee-mi, MOVED)..." The word's used in Acts 7:16 (Jacob's bones were carried over into Shechem of the promised land) and Galatians 1:6 (you are so soon removed from Him who called you into the grace of Christ), Hebrews 11:5 (by faith Enoch was translated) also Jude 4 (turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness). Meta means with, and titheemi means lay down or set down. The sense of the combination is to move, or remove. ...there is made of necessity a change (G3331) (meta thesis, MOVEMENT) also of [the][ ] law. v13. It is evident...What is evident? That the priesthood was changed because of two reasons, as follows. v13. For it is evident, the priesthood being changed (moved)(v.12)...that our Lord sprang out (originated up and out of) of Judah. Judah means "praise", whereas Levi means "joined to." v14. It is yet far more evident...what is far more evident? That the priesthood was changed. v14. And it is yet far more evident, the priesthood being changed (moved) (v.12)...for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there arises another priest. v16. who is made [a priest], v17. The LORD testified for the Lord, Jesus, in declaring an oath. That oath that is recorded in Psalm 110:4. v18. A disannulling (G115) (a theteesis, cancellation) of the commandment going before (leading and preceding). A disannulling of the leading and preceding commandment. This could be a direct reference to verse 5 (see notes above), the commandment to the Levites and the Levite priests to take tithes. Upper roni555
